WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR DRIVING TO LATIGO?
There are numerous ways to drive to Latigo, each with its own character and advantages. Look below for the one that suits you best.
| SPECIAL NOTE: If your vehicle is equipped with a navigational device, do not use it to direct you for the last 10 miles of your tip to Latigo Ranch. Several guests have found themselves blocked by a locked gate on a seldom used county road (CR 17) because they followed the navigational device rather than these directions. |
FROM DENVER
FASTEST FROM DENVER
The direct route to Latigo takes you through high mountain scenery on an Interstate highway, cresting in Eisenhower Tunnel at nearly 11,000' elevation. As you descend from the Continental Divide into the Blue River Valley surrounded by majestic peaks, you will go north from the interstate through classic sagebrush country along the Blue River until you start the climb into the alpine forest approaching the ranch.
TIME: from DIA about 2 3/4 hr. For kids (and parents) who can’t get here fast enough, this is the best option.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-70 west 60 miles to Exit 205 at Silverthorne. Turn right on Highway 9 and continue north for 37 miles to Kremmling. At the stoplight in Kremmling, go west (left, toward Steamboat Springs) on U.S. 40 for 6 miles to Highway 134. Turn left toward Toponas. Go 4 miles on Highway 134 to Red Dirt Road (It has multiple personalities, and you may also see signs indicating it as CR 19 and USFS 100), and turn right. Follow the signs for 7 miles to Latigo Ranch. Those signs will direct you to turn right from CR 19 on to CR 191. Then another right from CR 191 to CR 1911, and that will lead you into the ranch. The travel time to Latigo from the west edge of Denver is approximately 2 hours, and we are 30 minutes from Kremmling.
SCENIC ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
This drive winds over the Continental Divide above timberline yielding exceptional scenery of snow fields, dense pine forest, high mountain meadows and Colorado’s largest natural lake. If you want to see wildlife such as elk and moose, this is the most likely option to provide that. In summer, traffic may be slow, but the views are worth it. From Granby, the highway follows the headwaters of the famous Colorado River through Byers Canyon to Kremmling.
TIME: from DIA about 4 1/2 hr. Some folks like to spend the night in Estes Park or nearby to break the drive up.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-25 north to US 34 and follow US 34 West (left) to Estes Park, up over Trail Ridge Road to Granby. At Granby, turn right onto US Hwy 40 and proceed to Kremmling. Stay on US 40 through Kremmling 6 miles to the junction with Hwy 134. Turn left on 134 and go 4 miles to County Road 19. From that point follow the signs to Latigo, 7 miles off the highway.
QUINTESSENTIAL RANCH COUNTRY
One of our favorite drives is to follow the gorgeous Poudre River Canyon to breath-taking Cameron Pass, from there descending into North Park, a vast valley of expansive hayfields and meandering streams. This is the West at its finest with huge cattle ranches, some of which still harvest their hay with teams of horses. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself imagining tipi’s strung along the creeks and bison wandering the grassy valley... or any number of Western movies you have seen. When you descend from Cameron Pass, break the drive up by stopping at the State Parks Moose Center at the base of the pass.
TIME: from DIA about 5 hr. Probably not a good option for impatient kids, but superb for those who like to fantasize about the Old West. Be sure to fill your gas tank in Ft. Collins.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-25 north to Fort Collins, exit 269 and go west toward the mountains. In Fort Collins take US 287 north (right) out of the city about 10 miles to the junction with Hwy. 14, which goes to Walden. Stay on Hwy 14 to US 40 on Rabbit Ears Pass. Turn left on US 40 and drive about half an hour to Hwy 134, which goes to Toponas. Take 134 to the right, go 4 miles to County Road 19 and follow the signs 7 miles to Latigo.
From The North or I-80
You may desire to avoid Denver if you are driving from the northern states. In that case take I-80 to Laramie, Wyoming, and from there take Hwy 230 to Walden, Colorado. From Walden, follow the directions given in “Quintessential Ranch Country” ( Hwy. 14).
From Glenwood Springs/Grand Junction
Drive east on I-70 to the Wolcott exit and take Highway 131 north to Toponas. At Toponas turn right onto Highway 134. Drive over Gore Pass descending the east side; do not try to turn at the Red Dirt Road sign on top of Gore Pass. Just past mile marker 23, you will see the turn to the left for Red Dirt Road that you want to take. Follow the signs for 7 miles to Latigo Ranch. Those signs will direct you to turn right from CR 19 on to CR 191. Then another right from CR 191 to CR 1911, and that will lead you into the ranch. The travel time to Latigo from Toponas is approximately 1 hour.
